Securing a Temporary Inflatable Event Structure

All temporary Inflatable structures should be safely secured to the surface on which it has been installed. Variables such as surface type, location, elevation and weather should all be considered along with the Structures engineering calculations.

Different ground surface types require different fixing methods Hardstanding surfaces would normally require ballast weight, this could be in the form of sandbags, water containers or concrete blocks. Other factors still need to be considered as different surface types offer different levels of coefficient frictions such as tarmac, concrete, smooth or rough surfaces, gravel or block paving should all be taken into consideration. You should always follow the engineering documentation to provide the correct amount of ballast to meet the structures wind calculations for both sliding and uplift.

If drilling the ground is permitted you may also consider raw bolts or chemical anchors. This method would require the correct amount of anchors with the right amount of pull force to meet your structures calculations. Again a fixing is only as good as the sub-structure it is being installed into and a pull test would be recommended.

Grass installation would normally use a stake or spiral grass anchor. Other factors should still be considered when installing on to grass such as Terrain, Soil density, soil water saturation and a pull-out test should be conducted to ensure you have the required pull-out load on each stake as per the structural calculation.
Before any type of ground, fixing is installed the surface should be scanned to ensure there are no buried services such as power cables, gas or water pipes. If any are detected they should be clearly marked and avoided by a minimum of 1m each side and ballast weight should be used in its place.

Other Elements to be taken into consideration:
  • Site wind exposure
  • Wind Region
  • Long-term weather forecast
  • Duration of Structure on site
  • Nearby structures and the effect these could have
  • Size of the structure


Concrete Ballast blocks Placed around the perimeter and secured to the structure using certified fixing straps and shackles.

Sand Bags The required number of 25KG sandbags are placed around the perimeter of the structure inside the internal walls

Stakes The required number of Stakes are installed into the grass and then fixed to the Inflatable Structure to secure it as per the structural designs.
